Such richness of colour is within this carnelian sphere, from deep oranges which appear almost brown, to brighter and paler oranges. It has a very warming aspect to it.
Energy in Medicine
This is traditionally a protective crystal, which also happens to have grounding qualities too. When we are protected, in terms of energy, we know what belongs to us, and what belongs to someone else.
Have you ever been in someone’s company, and when you’ve gone to meet them you feel really great, but when you part company after a couple of hours or so, you feel drained of energy? This is known as energy vampirism and usually they are completely unaware of what they are doing. All they know is that they always feel really great after having met up with you.
And what about feeling angry for no reason, or jealous about something when generally you’re not a jealous person? Other people can influence our mood very easily, just think of walking into a room where there has been an argument; you can cut the atmosphere with a knife! But conversely think about a wedding; everyone is happy. There are good vibes for the happy couple which rub off onto everyone.
We all know about the football matches where one moment everyone’s happy and cheering for their team, and the next moment it turns ugly, and suddenly there is a mob mentality acting out. Those involved feel dragged, willingly or otherwise into the fray and one voice adds to another, and another and another.
The bottom line in all of these examples is that the person is not protected, they do not have a strong energy field and consequently they are swept up in someone else’s drama.
Looking at the examples again, if you have a strong energy field and are therefore protected, when meeting the ‘needy’ friend, you will remain in good spirits as they will not be able to leach energy from you. On departing, they will not feel as good as they usually do when meeting you. If you’ve found yourself uncharacteristically argumentative for example, when you have a strong energy field, another’s negative attitude will not affect you. And if you find yourself in a crowd that turns ugly, you will have the presence of mind to move out of the crowd and not be pulled into something nasty.
This is what protection means, this is what having a strong energy field means. And as an added bonus, it has grounding qualities also. The two things go hand in hand, if you’re protected, you’re also grounded, and if you’re grounding, you’re also protected. When you are this, you are also able to be more creative as you are more able to bring light from above, down into matter here on earth. You will be able to get things done!

Carnelian comes in varying shades of red, orange and peach. It can also be banded, as in layers of different colours. The brownish shades which can also be found are known as Sard.

Carnelian is easily obtained and can be found in Peru, UK, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, India, Brazil and Uruguay.
Interesting Facts
Carnelian is a chalcedony which is part of the quartz family.
In times gone by, it was believed that wearing carnelian gave the wearer courage in battle. Today it is considered to help people overcome fears of public speaking.
The ancient Egyptians used this crystal to protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife. It was also worn by master architects to show their rank and status. Carnelian was also referred to as the setting sun and it was believed to represent both the male and the female by its red and orange colours.
Carnelian was the first stone in the breastplate of Aaron, the elder brother of Moses and signified one of the twelve tribes of Israel.
For those of you interested in tarot, this crystal is associated with The Empress in the major arcana. I do feel there is a connection with the Queen of Pentacles and the Eight of Pentacles.
Carnelian is an alternative birth stone for July, and it is also the crystal associated with the astrological signs of Aries, Leo and Virgo. Also, modern thought suggests that carnelian is associated with the seventeenth wedding anniversary.
