Do you ever have those times when you really want to see into the heart of something, but don’t know how to do it, Obsidian allows you to access the deepest parts of yourself in order to help heal difficult situations.
Energy in Medicine
How many times in your life has something happened that knocked you for six, that something suddenly had such a hold over you that you couldn’t shake off and was constantly in your thoughts, in your mind? If left to its own devices, it could take weeks, sometimes months for those thoughts to dissipate, leaving you free once again. But what if there was something we could actively do to help release those never-ending thoughts faster, so as to feel more at peace? Obsidian is the answer.
First and foremost, obsidian is grounding crystal. In this picture, there is snowflake obsidian, mahogany obsidian and black obsidian. All three can be used for grounding. However, black obsidian can also access those parts other obsidians cannot reach. Those of you of a certain age will recognise similarities of that line from a famous beer commercial.
If we take a moment to think about where obsidian comes from, we can understand how else it can help us. As obsidian is volcanic glass, it originally came from very deep inside the earth, before being ejected as lava out of the volcano, before solidifying. And this is the key to how it helps us see issues in a new way, and thereby allowing us to release them.
Obsidian can really help you look inside of yourself to see what is going on. Whereas other crystals can be expansive, making you feel much larger than you actually are, when working with obsidian it can takes you deeply inwards, allowing for whatever it is that is troubling you to be drawn out and come to the surface. It becomes easier to deal with the issue as you can now start seeing it from other angles. It allows you to approach the issue in a way you may not have thought possible previously.
By having a crystal healing session, you will be able to deal with your difficult emotions and experiences much more effectively. By continuing to work with crystals and having crystal healings, you will be more comfortable dealing with your shadow aspects and will also be grounded.

It is also possible to get rainbow obsidian, gold sheen obsidian and silver sheen obsidian. Each of these are still black, but due to various inclusions when cooling, they have the appearance of multi‑colours on the surface, a silver sheen or a golden sheen as appropriate. There is also a variety called Apaches Tear which is transparent black glass.
Rarity and Location
Ordinary black obsidian, snowflake obsidian and mahogany obsidian are readily available, the others not quite so easily obtained. It can be found in Mexico, Santorini, USA and Japan.
Obsidian is actually a volcanic glass and it is what’s known as amphorous, which means it has no internal structure, which other crystals have.
It is one of the oldest known crystals and has been known to be shaped into, arrowheads, spears, knives and other tools, particularly in the Palaeolithic era.
John Dee, astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I used an obsidian scrying mirror, which is now held in the British Museum in Central London. It is also believed that Nostradamus also used one to help with his predictions.
Today, obsidian blades are used in heart surgery as they are far sharper than the surgical scalpels usually used in surgery.
For those of you interested in tarot, this crystal is associated with The Hermit, The Devil and The Tower in the major arcana.
Obsidian is an alternative birth stone for December, and it is also the crystal associated with the astrological sign of Scorpio with snowflake obsidian being associated with Sagittarius. Obsidian doesn’t appear to be associated with a wedding anniversary, traditional or modern.
