Isn’t the Moon fascinating; the mere fact that this huge celestial rock brightens our sky at regular intervals, and it has the power to control the tides of our seas and oceans. It is all about flow.
Moonstone is part of the feldspar group of crystals and one of its main properties is helping us with the flow of our lives. It’s deeply connected to the element of water, which as we know, also has the ability to flow.
Energy in Medicine
When was the last time you were aware you were not stressed? Stress sadly seems to be part of our modern-day life. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines stress as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them’. Now this can clearly be from other people, particularly in work type situations, but we are just as good at creating this pressure on ourselves in our fast-paced environment. The first time I heard the word stress was some time in the 1980’s, and people didn’t know what is was, and now it’s used all the time. That surely tells us something.
There is an amazingly long list of symptoms that can be attributed to stress. Some of them you may have yourself, some of them you may not have personally, but you know someone who does have others. Some mild examples from this long list include short temper, insecurity, panic attacks, sleeplessness, neck and shoulder tension and backache. More severe symptoms can include high or low blood pressure, grinding teeth, headaches, to the more serious nervous breakdown, self-inflicted injury and suicide thoughts and tendencies. And these are only some of the recognised symptoms. There are others.
So you can see this thing we call stress can be a very major problem for us if not addressed. Basically, the physiological responses of fight or flight are a left-over effect from our days as hunter gatherers. What this means today is that if we’re in Tesco’s and find ourselves getting frustrated with other shoppers for one reason or another, we can’t very well go in all guns blazing or alternatively turn tail and run away leaving our shopping trolley behind. It’s simply not appropriate in that situation. So, the best thing we can do for ourselves in the moment, is to breathe deeply to release the tension that has accumulated.
Being in nature I find is a wonderful way to naturally de-stress. There’s something about being among the trees that is really relaxing and refreshing. You may prefer being on a beach by the sea or rambling across fields or climbing up hills and down dales. But the key is being in nature, reconnecting with the earth that we live on, and this naturally strengthens our energy field, and we find we don’t feel as stressed as we did before.
When we are stressed, we are not grounded or protected, so it’s really important to be connected to the earth and to have a strong energy field. These two things go hand in hand and our whole being is better for these things. For starters, we are no longer feeling so stressed. We are much more able to deal with the things in life that previously we found frustrating or difficult. We are able to manage our thoughts and emotions much more easily and we no longer experience swings of a pendulum in regard to those states. Ultimately, we are more balanced.
If we were able to see our energy field, when stressed it would appear to be quite spiky, mimicking the tension we are feeling. This is where moonstone comes in as it has the ability to smooth out our energy field with its flowing nature. It helps us become more balanced with that all-important stronger energy field.

Rarity and Location
Moonstone is easily obtained and can be found in India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Brazil, USA, Mexico, Australia, Africa and Tanzania.
Many people in ancient cultures believed that moonstone was created from moonbeams. It was named after its blue-white sheen, so similar to the Moon shining down.
Moonstone displays adularescence, which is an optical wonder causing a glow on the surface of the crystal. The light reflects across the different layers of feldspar which diffuses and consequently bounces around the crystal.
In times gone by, moonstone had special significance for lovers as it was believed that their future would be revealed at the time of a full moon, by placing a moonstone in their mouths. In Europe it was also said to reconcile estranged lovers.
In more recent times, it was a popular jewellery choice during the Art Nouveau period of 1890 to 1910.
For those of you interested in tarot, it is the crystal associated with The High Priestess in the major arcana.
Moonstone is an alternative birth stone for June alongside pearl. It is also the crystal associated with the astrological sign of Cancer, which period falls partly in June. Also modern thought suggests that moonstone can be an alternative gift for the third wedding anniversary.
